The HTC DROID Incredible on Verizon is reportedly set to receive a software update in the near future. There are a lot of “issues” that the upcoming software solution for this mobile phone would cover, it seems, including a fix for some security issues the device was said to have, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11n connectivity, which should be enabled as soon as the update lands.

Moreover, there are some voices over the Internet suggesting that the update would actually be the first step HTC and Verizon make towards upgrading the device to Android 2.2 Froyo. The upcoming operating system version comes with support for Wi-Fi 802.11n, and having the functionality enabled on the phone suggests that things are moving in this direction. According to a filing with the FCC on Friday, the Wi-Fi 802.11n should indeed be enabled on the HTC DROID Incredible via a software update, which means that we should soon learn Verizon has started pushing it out.

In addition to this new feature, it seems that the update is expected to bring a security fix to the high-end device. The DROID Incredible stores on its internal memory browser thumbnails, and some see this as a major privacy issue. What the device does is that it keeps screenshots of the websites one visited, which means that anyone having access to the device can view what one visited. However, HTC says it has discovered the issue and that it plans on delivering a software update to fix it. Other Android phones from the company store these thumbnails to the SD card, which can be easily removed.

“HTC has identified the root cause of the DROID Incredible not deleting web page thumbnails after a factory reset, and is creating an update which will eliminate this issue. This will be distributed through a software maintenance release that will be pushed to devices in the near future,” the company announced (via phandroid). At the same time, it provided users with a temporary solution to delete these files, via three simple steps: 1) Go to the “Settings” menu 2) Select “SD Card and Phone Storage” 3) Select “Format Phone Storage” One thing that should be noted here is that this move will wipe out all data on the internal storage, including music and image files. This means that one should perform a backup of all files on the device, except, of course, from the thumbnails one wants to delete. No details emerged on when the software update for DROID Incredible should be delivered, but it might land sooner than expected.
