A hard process, not repeatable

One of the latest mobile phones to fall victim to a root hack is the DROID Incredible by HTC, the high-end Android-based handset currently available for purchase in the US via wireless carrier Verizon. It seems that the process of rooting this device was a rather difficult one, but some succeeded, much for the entertainment of enthusiasts.

It's a common fact that rooting any Android-based mobile phone offers access to features otherwise unavailable for the end user. According to a post on unrevoked, the hack for DROID Incredible, “if executed successfully, should allow you to deploy an unsigned update.zip to a device running a current (Android 2.1+) version of recovery. This hack is for power users only right now, and is not as simple as unrevoked is. We are working on expanding the race window.”

Considering the fact that the solution is still in its early stages, users might consider staying away from it for the time being. Hacking a handset might not return the expected results at any time, so it might prove wiser to install only official solutions than going for unofficial ones, but that won't stop enthusiasts from trying to gain root access to their phones, that's for sure.

According to Engadget, those who came up with the hack for DROID Incredible did warn that the process was a very hard one, and that one might not be able to repeat it in case something went awfully wrong. However, they managed to do it successfully, and it might not be too long before they provide other users with a simple solution to gain control over their DROID Incredible.

Those who will go with the solution should be able to get things right when the system is booting in recovery. However, official updates pushed to the device would most probably reverse the process, which means that those interested in keeping the root access should not install newer software solutions.
