Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is gearing up for the launch of a successor for its HTC Incredible smartphone, dubbed, of course, DROID Incredible 2, and it seems that the official launch is closer than expected.

Following a long series of rumors and leaked info on this device, Verizon's showcase application for DROID Incredible 2 has made an appearance on the Android Market, which suggests that it should not be too long at all until the carrier makes a formal announcement on this device.

Previously, the same happened with other handsets at the wireless operator. They were officially introduced the same day or shortly after the showcase applications landed in the software portal.

The showcase application that emerged for Incredible 2 is similar to the one spotted for the HTC ThunderBolt a while ago, the guys over at Droid-life, who gave it a try, report.

The mobile application can be downloaded from the Android Market here, but those interested in it should be warned that it does not do too much.

As stated above, the one thing that it does would be to signal that the DROID Incredible 2 should become available for purchase soon enough.

However, given the fact that previous rumors on the matter proved false, since the DROID Incredible 2 was not launched until now, we should wait for the official announcement to arrive before nailing this down.

This should indeed happen soon, and, if the arrival of the said application is not enough to prove it, the fact that the handset was briefly listed on Verizon's website should help.

Complemented by a recently leaked user manual for Incredible 2, all these point at an almost here launch day.

The smartphone would be released as Verizon's own flavor of the Incredible S, which was officially unveiled during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.

It should include a 4-inch screen, 1GHz application processor, 1.1GB of internal memory, microSD card slot (up to 32GB), 8MP camera, WiFi, 3G, GPS receiver, and Google's Android 2.2 Froyo OS on board.
