Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is readying a new software update for the Motorola DROID Bionic devices on its airwaves, and it appears that the owners of this smartphone might be able to download and install it as soon as today.

Verizon did not make an official announcement on the matter, but it already posted a changelog for the new firmware, and all signs point at a near release.

The new update was expected ever since last month, but Motorola and Verizon have delayed its release to December.

This time around, however, it appears that things have been put in order, and that the software will arrive on devices as version 5.5.893, packing a great deal of enhancements and new features.

Following the update, users will enjoy enhancements related to Email, Messaging & Data, along with Applications & Widgets enhancements, along with new Device and Call features.

Here are some of the changes that Verizon and Motorola listed in update’s release notes: - Improved stability of data connection on 3G and 4G. - Fixed lockup that could occur while browsing during the handoff from Wi-Fi to 4G. - The number of devices supported by Mobile Hotspot has increased to 8. - Fixes have been deployed to keep the device from becoming stuck on a black screen and requiring a battery pull to recover. - Improvements in device stability help avoid device power cycles. - Fixed issue where the device would automatically power back up after being powered down. - The calling screen will no longer be recreated, improving performance. - Playback media can be heard while using a Bluetooth headset. - Improvements in the use of the Messaging application.

However, these are only some of the enhancements that Motorola and Verizon have packed inside the new software update. The full changelog is available via Verizon’s support website. Users will also find there detailed instructions on how to perform the upgrade.
