Motorola and Verizon have started the delivery of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the DROID Bionic devices, something that was suggested to happen a few days ago.

Starting with Friday, October 19, owners of this device should be receiving notifications on the availability of this OS upgrade, though not all of them will be able to enjoy it right from the start.

According to Verizon, the update will be delivered in stages, which means that some users will have to wait a bit longer for it to arrive. However, the new OS iteration should be pushed to all devices in a matter of days.

Those who are eager to receive the new software can also head over to Settings > About Phone > Software Updates and perform manual checks on the availability of the update.

“Ice Cream Sandwich includes upgraded functionality and new features, enhancing the usability of the DROID BIONIC,” the wireless services provider notes on its website.

“Direct Access Lock takes users to the camera, text messages, keypad or unlock screen, providing direct access to the user’s most accessed functions. The Enhanced Notifications Window features a new swipe to dismiss functionality. Additionally, creating folders is easy by dropping one app on top of another.”

Before proceeding with the update, users should make sure that the battery inside their devices is charged at least at 50 percent, and that they performed a backup of all data on the phone, so that nothing is lost during the upgrade process.

Those DROID Bionic owners who need additional info on how to perform the upgrade should head over to Verizon’s support website for that.

They should also stay tuned for additional details on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade for their devices, which has been confirmed today by Motorola, and which is expected to become available for download in the coming months.
