Motorola DROID BIONIC has just been considerably discounted by Verizon Wireless, but is also got removed from DroidDoes.com site. This might be an indication that the carrier prepares to discontinue the smartphone.

Starting today, the DROID BIONIC is available for free with a new two-year agreement and after a $50 USD online discount. Verizon doesn’t say whether or not this is a limited time offer, but we suspect the smartphone will be free until it reaches EOL (end of life) status.

However, it looks like the phone is only free on contract through Verizon’s online store, so expect this one to cost $50 USD at the carrier’s brick and mortar locations.

Motorola announced the DROID BIONIC more than a year ago at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but managed to physically launch it on the market nine months later, in September.

Although most of its specs and design were redux, it was a bit undergeared for an Android flagship smartphone especially that Motorola launched the DROID RAZR only a few weeks later.

That’s why most people preferred to wait one more month to grab the DROID RAZR instead of the DROID BIONIC, which was quite appealing when it was announced at the beginning of the year.

Since Motorola launched the DROID BIONIC so late, the smartphone's sales weren’t quite as expected. Even though the US-based plans to deliver DROID BIONIC owners the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, we’re wondering how many users will still have the device until Motorola delivers as promised.

Android 4.0 ICS for Motorola DROID BIONIC has been pushed back to “early Q3 2012,” though the estimated release date is subject to change.

Unfortunately, Motorola refreshed its Android 4.0 ICS upgrade roadmap a few times, so it’s quite possible that the DROID BIONIC will not receive the promised update as scheduled. Check it out here.
