Following a long series of rumors and leaks, the Motorola DROID 3 smartphone was finally made official at Verizon Wireless in the United States.

The handset is now available for purchase from the wireless carrier's website for $199.99 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement. The full retail price tag for the new device was set at $459.99, Verizon notes on its website.

Earlier today, the mobile phone made an appearance on Verizon's Droid Does page, where all the details on its pricing were unveiled, but no info on when it was set to become available emerged before.

The same as its predecessors, the Motorola DROID and the Motorola DROID 2 Global, the new device comes with a sliding form factor, while packing great hardware specs.

However, the new addition to the series also sports increased performance capabilities when compared to the predecessors, mainly due to the inclusion of a dual-core application processor into the mix.

The phone puts together a 4'' display (qHD 960x540 pixels) with a QWERTY keyboard for fast typing.

“Flex your fingers of fury on the new 5–row keyboard that’s a launch pad for productivity. Ascend the throne of typing speed - demons as you fire off follow-ups without stopping to switch between letters and numbers,” Verizon notes on its website.

With 16GB of onboard storage and a microSD memory card slot for adding more memory into the mix, DROID 3 offers enough space for storing full HD 1080p videos that can be recorded with the 8-megapixel photo snapper on its back.

The handset comes with enhanced connectivity capabilities too, including 3G connectivity, 800/1900, CDMA EVDO rev A and GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS, WiFi, Bluetooth or WiFi Hotspot, as well as DLNA and a built-in GPS receiver, or a 1540mAH Li–Ion battery.

Powered by Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread, DROID 3 also sports access to various services from the Internet giant, as well as support for the various applications in the Android Market.

“Power productivity with an ever-growing battalion of apps that catapult boredom into oblivion. Scour the immense Android Market and V CAST Media Store to claim the hard-working and hard-playing apps that have been created for you to command,” Verizon notes.
