News on Verizon Wireless and Motorola preparing the launch of a new Android-based DROID handset made it into the wild quite a few months ago, and it seems that they are even closer than before from being officially confirmed. We're referring here to the Motorola DROID 2, a QWERTY-enabled slider that would prove the actual successor of the original DROID by Motorola, since the DROID X does not come with a physical keypad, and which has just emerged in what appear to be official photos of it.

The Motorola DROID 2 surfaced a while ago into the wild as the Motorola A955, which already received FCC approval, and the first official images with it have just made it to the Internet, at least this is what a recent article on Engadget claims. Nothing is yet official on the phone's arrival, but chances are that the wireless carrier would make it available for purchase come August 23, it seems. Specific details on the phone's pricing also lack at the moment.

In addition to those photos of Motorola's DROID 2 mobile phone, Engadget also came up with some info on Verizon's plans for the rest of the year, including the launch of new BlackBerry devices, or that of a 10.1-inch tablet. While no specific info on the slate emerged for the time being, chances are that it would prove to be an Android device, especially since Verizon announced previously this year that it intends to release such products on its airwaves.

As for the new BlackBerry lineup, rumor has it that it should include at least two new devices, namely the Curve 3 and Storm 3. The former might prove to be none other than the BlackBerry 9300 handset spotted a few times before, while the latter might arrive as a version of the BlackBerry 9800 slider. Previous rumors on Storm 3 suggested that it might include support for LTE as well. As one can easily imagine, none of these details are official, though it might not be too long before Verizon confirms them.
