Verizon's DROID family of Android-based handsets is about to grow larger. In addition to a possible mid-level device from Motorola, the previously leaked mini DROID, the wireless carrier is also preparing the launch of a high-end device from the handset vendor, namely the DROID 2 by Motorola, which is expected to arrive on shelves in about one month from now.

Last week, Big Red launched another Android handset from Motorola, the DROID X, which is already proving a popular device, and was rumored to plan the launch of a third DROID by Motorola phone, the said DROID 2. Unlike the new DROID X, which sports a candybar form factor, the upcoming DROID 2 should include a side-sliding design, which would bring it closer to the original DROID, which arrived on shelves last year.

A recent article on Engadget suggests that the slider would be set for an August 23 release date on Verizon's network, and that it should sport a price tag of $199 on a two year contract, something that does not come too much as a surprise, one should agree. In case one would like to buy it contract free, one would have to pay $599 for the device. However, something that might have not been known before is that the DROID 2 would sport an 8GB microSD card included in the package.

Until Motorola and Verizon announce officially the upcoming release date of DROID 2 by Motorola, we can have a look at a series of shots from a packaging facility that reportedly handles the device. The photos follow the recently spotted official images with the device, as well as a long series of leaked details we had the chance to report on.

All in all, the arrival of DROID 2 at Verizon seems to be a sure thing, though it remains to be seen when that would actually happen, and whether all the rumors on the phone's specs and pricing would pan out. Stay tuned for more info on this.
