One of the latest mobile phones to have been rooted is the DROID 2 by Motorola, which landed on Verizon Wireless' airwaves only a few weeks ago.

In all fairness, this does not come as a surprise, since most of the latest Android-based devices got rooted soon after their official launch.

It should also be mentioned that the DROID 2 is very similar to the DROID X, which already got rooted a while ago.

For the time being, the process is a little complicated, so those who might want to root their brand new DROID 2 to be able to install applications that are not allowed otherwise should refrain from doing it for the time being, especially in case they are not familiar with this kind of action.

However, it might not be too long before one-click root access comes to DROID 2 too, just as it did on DROID X a while ago.

Those interested in rooting their phones do so at their own risk, since the warranty is voided, and there are certain risks involved, including the possibility that the handset gets bricked.

“Proceed at your own risk. I and the providers of this code are not responsible for anything you do to your phone! Also, I would advise against removing any bloatware until we have a working recovery or sbf file,” a recent post on XDA Developers forums notes.

According to the author of the said post, the rooting process is indeed similar with the one used for DROID X. All the necessary info on rooting the DROID 2 are available there.

For the time being, gaining root access on a DROID 2 by Motorola would only offer users the possibility to install more applications on their devices.

However, chances are that custom Android ROMs would also emerge for the DROID 2, and that the phone would offer more functionality through them, so keep an eye on this space to learn more on this.
