The App Store has just made room for id Software’s
iPhone port of DOOM, a classic, first-person shooter that should be welcomed by most handset owners and fans of the FPS genre. Priced at $6.99, the game is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch and requires iPhone OS 2.0 or later.
“Welcome to Hell! Prepare to relive the First Person Shooter that defined a generation with the legendary original DOOM - now on the iPhone,” the official iTunes App Store description reads. “As a space marine stationed on the planet Mars, you are all that stands between the armies of Hell and their invasion of planet Earth!” id Software says. “Wield unforgettable weapons like the Chainsaw and the BFG 9000 while fighting through notorious monsters like the Imp, Cacodemon, and Hell Knight!”
According to the company, the classic shooter includes the original episodes, as well as Episode Four, Thy Flesh Consumed, spread across 36 levels. Players can choose from customizable control schemes designed by John Carmack, id Software co-founder and a video-game industry legend. The title also boasts a multiplayer mode. “With a wireless connection, battle up to four players in Deathmatch mode, or work together cooperatively and fight back against the demons of Hell,” id Software explains.
