A second alleged sighting of missing British girl Madeleine McCann has led police on the wrong trail, reports say.

According to Stuff NZ, she was last seen in Portugal in 2007, in the town of Praia da Luz. Posted above is a photo released last year, depicting how Madeleine would look like if she were still alive.

While a lookalike of hers has been spotted in Queenstown on New Year's Eve, DNA testing confirmed that the girl New Zealand police found is not McCann. She had been spotted before in March 2012.

As the girl’s family wishes her identity remain secret, a photo of the lookalike is not available as of yet.

“Given that there is conclusive evidence that their daughter is not Madeleine McCann and has no connection to Madeleine McCann, it is only right that she and her family are entitled to a level of privacy that most of us enjoy,” Detective Inspector Steve McGregor explains.
