DMC 4, Pirated to Hell and Back

One of the main issues when it comes to PC games is piracy - that's the general reason why developers prefer to go for the safer consoles - which is something a bit strange, since piracy
on the Nintendo DS is a huge problem, too, but tons of games keep being released on the handheld. Indeed, production prices are lower, but it's still piracy.

Anyway, it seems that the same piracy curse hit the latest game in the Devil May Cry series and that's bugging Capcom. Posting on the official forums, vice president of strategic planning Christian Svensson wrote, "I'm not sure about how Capcom in general feels but it's not doing as well as I would like in the US at retail. It's such a good version and it really deserves better sales. I know it's getting pirated to hell and back (it was up on torrents literally the day it shipped)".

Svensson added that Capcom's titles would eventually be distributed digitally - something which could reduce piracy - but he had no words on the time that happens. He also stated that marketing on the product was "rather significant" even though people say that the PC version wasn't promoted well enough. However, he admitted to be surprised by the lack of reviews for the PC version of Devil May Cry 4.

"Marketing on the title has actually been rather significant, especially through vehicles brought to us by partners like Nvidia, Dell and Intel. The game has been shown at events all over the world in their booths at tons of computing events (especially in Asia), multiple media tours. There's an upcoming promotion with Dell, etc," he said.

In the end, he recognized that sales figures are affected by other aspects, not only PC piracy by saying that it is not the ultimate cause, but it's a factor.

This is no surprise at all. DMC4 was a fantastic game IMO, but here's the way I see it in a sort of point form:

1) DMC1 and DMC2 were not released on PC, and were play station only (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) titles.

2) DMC3 on the PC was such a damn piece of garbage anyone who played it was probably wary of the series at that point.

3) Not all PC gamers played DMC1-3 due to either not having a console, or DMC 3 just being trash.

4) Here we are with DMC4 out, but why would a PC gamer just go buy it? A good chunk of them don't know the series, and a probable smaller chunk of them still have nightmares from DMC3. But admittedly, DMC4 looks pretty cool, so what do you do? You pirate it.

I pirated it, but I was so impressed with the game I bought the collectors edition. Piracy doesn't ALWAYS equate to lost sales, I just felt the demo (which was literally 10 minutes long) didn't give me a good representation of the game.

That's how it goes with me. If I pirate a game it's usually due to no/ an inadequate demo. If the game is good, I will buy it. If it's bad, I will have probably played it for an hour or 2 then delete it from my hard drive.
