40-year-old singer and DJ Sonique, real name Sonia Clarke, has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is now receiving emergency treatment and undergoing surgery at a clinic in London, her publicist has confirmed for The Independent. The singer reportedly received the shock diagnosis the other day and has decided, upon doctors’ recommendation, that immediate action must be taken.

“The performer, whose real name is Sonia Clarke, is having an operation at a clinic in Harley Street, central London. She was told that she had the disease last Tuesday and is undergoing treatment as a matter of urgency, spokesman Stuart Watts said.” the aforementioned publication informs. Sonique was admitted to the clinic early today and is believed to remain there at least until Saturday, when further details on her condition will also be released to the public.

Watts also revealed for The Independent that Sonique was preparing for the release of her new single “World of Change,” which was initially supposed to be launched in July. Whether the release will go ahead as scheduled is now entirely dependent on the singer’s health, her spokesperson underlined, as also are the plans for the upcoming months. As noted above, other details on her current condition have not yet been made available.

DJ Sonique is not the only celebrity to be diagnosed with breast cancer, in a context in which statistics show it’s the most common form of cancer and the second cause of death by cancer in women, with an incidence rate that has increased by over 30% in recent years. Fellow musicians Kylie Minogue, Anastacia and Sheryl Crow have also gone through similar experiences, and have come out of them as genuine winners.

Actress Christina Applegate of the “Married with Children” fame has also been diagnosed with this type of cancer – only that her struggle was longer and admittedly more traumatic. Applegate underwent a double mastectomy and the reconstructive surgery and it’s just now that she’s able to openly speak about it and what that meant to her.
