Rock is dead, new music will survive

Recently we've been hearing quite a lot about music games, largely due to the fact that a lot of people like to listen to music, and combining it with a game in which they can play along with friends or family is a guaranteed recipe for profit if you are a video game developer or publisher.

That is why Activision is preparing quite a lot of titles in its Guitar Hero music game lineup, with about eight more iterations to be released before 2009 ends, which will highlight the departure of the series from traditional rock and the adoption of more modern music. That is why the upcoming DJ Hero title will attract a younger audience, at least according to the chief financial officer of Activision, Thomas Tippl.

He recently talked about the development of his company's Guitar Hero franchise and emphasized the fact that, although rock music had a lot of fans, the potential audience for DJ Hero was even bigger and would surely make the title a best seller.

“We continue to add additional legs to the Guitar Hero franchise with the launch of DJ Hero,” said Tippl. “What that allows us to do is come up with a very innovative product that allows us to sell a software product plus a hardware product as a bundle so that should be good for our average selling prices. But it also allows us to bring in new users to the music genre. Because it is a different kind of music for a different kind of gamer. So we hope to broaden the base there. That's why we are excited about DJ Hero, it gets us more opportunity for contemporary music, it probably skews younger than rock songs.”

Whether or not this shift will attract a younger audience depends only on the marketing that Activision will make, but one thing's for sure, the title will definitely sell a lot, and, like almost any Activision property, will surely see a lot of new iterations after its first release.
