The team might not have the time to create it in 2014

Patrick Back, the executive producer working on Battlefield 4, says that the team at DICE might be ready to introduce a new intellectual property to the market, but much depends on decisions made by publisher Electronic Arts.

The developer tells the Official Xbox Magazine that, “I think the market is ready, EA has been scrutinising everything that’s going on within the company, trying to cut away things that don’t make sense.”

He adds, “You could argue that a new crazy IP doesn’t make sense, but on the other hand that’s what leads to great games. You just need the right crazy IP.”

Bach has not offered any sort of details on what kind of title his company might be thinking of creating in the coming years.

Traditionally, the launch of new home consoles, like the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony, has seen entirely new universes created, including the likes of Killzone or Halo.

At the same time, modern gamers have been more interested in new installments in already established franchises and have not generated big sales for entirely new experiences, like the DICE-made Mirror’s Edge.

DICE is one of the biggest studios inside Electronic Arts at the moment and has also become the main technology supplier to other teams after it has created the Frostbite 3 engine, which is also set to be used by games as varied as the Need for Speed series and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The studio is at the moment busy creating new downloadable content for Battlefield 4 and delivering the balance updates that the community is requesting.

At the same time, they are working with Disney in order to deliver Star Wars: Battlefront, which is expected in 2015.

They have also teased a sequel for Mirror’s Edge, although no details have been offered.

This leaves them limited time to work on an entirely new game universe.
