Video game developer DICE has announced that it will include a number of weapon-based customization options for its upcoming first-person shooter Battlefield 3, allowing players to transform more than 50 weapons included in the game in significant ways.

The game creators are saying that each of the weapons a player can use will have three accessory slots and players will need to actively use each of the weapons in order to get more options about how the slots can be filled.

DICE says that gamers will be able to attach things like: longer barrels, grenade launchers under the weapon, underslung shotguns, better optical systems, sound suppressors, bipods for better stability, foregrips, flashlights and laser sights for precision.

A lot of the attachable gear will depend on the weapon used and it's likely that a lot of the more exciting options will only be offered to high level players.

DICE has given the example of how a simple carbine can be tuned for the fire support role at mid distances, with a heavier barrel, a 4X magnification scope and a bipod, with the same weapon becoming a recon suppressed weapon when the accessories used as a foregrip, a quick acquisition holographic scope and a sound muzzle.

Offering a high number of customization options for weapons will be a boon for multiplayer players, who will be able to mold the game experience to their own play style.

Variety is one of the most important qualities for a first-person shooter that hopes to take a big chunk out of the market share of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which is developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision Blizzard.

Battlefield 3 is set to be launched in late October and will be playable on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC through the Electronic Arts made Origin digital distribution service.
