On Wednesday, unknown cybercriminals started launching a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack against the website of DigiD, a Dutch electronic identification service utilized by Internet users to pay bills and taxes. It’s believed that around 10 million users have been impacted by the downtime.

According to a statement published on Thursday by the company, the digid.nl website was “bombarded” with traffic, making it difficult for real users to access the site. DigiD reassures customers that the attackers haven’t accessed their information.

The National Cyber Security Center has launched an investigation into the matter.

In an update made to the statement, DigiD warns customers to be on the lookout for phishing emails that might be designed to lure users to bogus websites in an attempt to trick them into handing over their personal details.

Currently, the digid.nl website still appears to be inaccessible.
