Sony has offered a few new details regarding its upcoming MMO project called DC Universe Online. The game is set to take the most important elements of the comics' universe created by DC and translate them into a videogame scenario.
Jim Lee, who is the executive creative director of the project says that the game can be
best described as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game". The player will spend most of the time in-game fighting villains and even other heroes, but there will be chances for non confrontational interaction and for traditional questing.
Both Metropolis and Gotham City are going to be featured in the game and the player will get the chance to interact with the most known characters in the
DC universe, like Superman and Batman. The most interesting villains, like Lex Luthor, will also be featured and you'll get to tackle their evil schemes with the better known heroes.
As for the powers which will be accessible in the game, Lee says that fire, ice, teleportation and flight will be present and that almost all the aspects of a hero and their powers will be customizable by the player.
The game will feature both instanced and common areas. Most of the player versus environment fights will take place in instanced sections of the game world, allowing players and parties to experience different environments and different enemies, while most of the player versus player action will happen in zones in the cities that are shared between all the players that are in-game.
Lee also mentioned the possibility of crossovers, saying that "We can tie-in future DC tent pole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously. The possibilities are numerous and very exciting". So there's a chance that the DC comic books will at one point feature characters from the
MMO.
