14 DAY TRIAL // Sony Online Entertainment made good on its word and turned its DC Universe Online online role playing game into a free-to-play title, without requiring a monthly fee, like it did since its release at the beginning of the year.
DC Universe was hyped as the biggest superhero-based MMOs but, while it featured quite a lot of popular heroes from the huge franchises owned by DC Comics, and received quite a lot of new content, including a large expansion themed around the Green Lantern, it wasn't that successful.
Now, SOE has turned the online title into a free-to-play game, which, instead of requiring a traditional monthly subscription, allows players to experience it for free, or pay for other sorts of features or exclusive items.
"Experience the game play features that have gotten players excited about DCUO since it launched, including the intense, fast-action brawler style combat system that makes it feel more like an action game than a massive online game. Now, you can see for yourself how DCUO offers the best of both worlds. Fight, fly, speed, battle with friends, pummel your enemies, explore the amazing locales of the DC Universe, hobnob with Wonder Woman… all for free," Sony revealed.
The game is now available as a free download on the PC, as well as on the PlayStation 3 console, via the PlayStation Store, and has three tiers of access, ranging from Free to Premium or Legendary. Check out what's included in each below.
- Free Access: New players now have access to the base game content in DC Universe Online, including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts outside of DLC packs. Free Access provides players with the ability to create two characters, join a League and many other benefits. Free level players can also purchase DLC packs, additional character slots, and more in-game.
- Premium Access: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) qualifies for the Premium Access level. Premium level players have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. DLC packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game. All previous subscribers are granted Premium Access automatically.
- Legendary Access: Legendary Access provides the most content, features and benefits of the three access levels. Loaded with enhanced features, Legendary Access is available for a monthly fee (multi-month discounts are available) and includes access to all DLC packs at no cost, more than 16 character slots, over 60 inventory slots, the ability to form Leagues, and many other benefits.
