A MMO for consoles

DC Universe, the MMO from Sony Computer Entertainment, has long been in development. A bit of gameplay was revealed this year at E3 and other trade shows but Sony says that no release period has been locked down for the title.

Yet, Geoff Johns, who came from DC Comics to give a helping hand with the script of the game, told MTV Multiplayer that the title might launch in early 2010 or in late 2009, if all went well from that moment. One of the major problems that Sony has been talking about is the fact that it might not be possible to use a game world shared between the PC and the PlayStation 3.

Geoff Johns says that the MMO will aim to change the way players look at the DC Universe. After all, “everyone knows Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, but this game gets you more entrenched in the universe. You meet the Metal Men, or Doom Patrol, and everyone gets a chance to embody something different”. He also mentioned that, in a way, gamers are like superheroes because “your secret identity is really outside the computer. You're a normal guy, and then when you log on to the game, you become the superhero”.

The game is part of an attempt from Sony to get MMOs on the PlayStation 3. If the game handles well and plays like a PC MMO on the console, then quite a few players might be more interested in the Sony made console, which at the moment is lagging in sales behind the Xbox 360 from Microsoft. The Redmond giant has no plans to create MMOs for its Xbox 360, even though Funcom keeps talking about a port for Age of Conan.
