Ed Boon, the leader of the development effort on the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us, says that the comic book creators at DC have given his own team a lot of opportunities and freedom when it comes to the creation of their fighting game.

Talking with IGN, the developer states, “I’ve been very impressed with how cooperative they’ve been. I think that they just basically realize that if you give that freedom that you’re gonna get a game that will be a better game.”

Boon believes that the approach is linked to the good results that superior freedom created when DC worked with the Rocksteady team in order to create the two Batman video games, both of which were huge critical and commercial successes.

The veteran developer adds, “And I think Arkham City is probably considered the greatest superhero game ever made. I don’t think they would’ve gotten that if they’d put the clamps on them and not let them try new stuff with that game.”

The new fighting game from NetherRealm Studios will use a number of heroes and villains from the extensive DC line-up, allowing players to pick any of them and fight on a variety of stages using a deep array of powers and abilities.

The game includes characters like Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Solomon Grundy, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Nightwing and, almost certainly, The Joker.

The game will use Unreal Engine 3 and one of the core focuses of the development team is to create layered stages where each character can show off their super abilities.

So far, Injustice: Gods Among Us has only been criticized for the fact that it will try to equalize the powers of wildly different heroes and villains.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to be launched during April 2013 on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Wii U from Nintendo and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
