The Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router and Charger reaches 750 Mbps in total

The best dual-band wireless routers are the ones that reach 1900 Mbps transfer speeds, but that's an extreme that isn't really necessary for most people, and one that D-Link didn't even bother trying to reach when it made the DIR-510L.

And it makes perfect sense, because the product was meant to be compact and portable, not overpowered at the expense of everything else.

Not that AC1900 routers are bulky and ugly mind you, they're not, but they're also not all that portable. Not because they're heavy (they aren't) but because they need to stay always plugged in and they are pretty big.

And since D-Link wanted its latest creation to be portable and small, it settled for 750 Mbps, which is still a lot more than most people need.

Well, maybe not, but common routers do get by with single-band coverage, when 300 Mbps (at most) are transmitted over the 2.4 GHz band.

Obviously, 750 Mbps is well beyond that, although the throughput will get divided between however many smartphones, tablets, laptops, or whatever else tap into the web connection through it.

The speed is achieved thanks to 300 Mbps over 2.4 GHz and 450 Mbps over 5 GHz.

You'll still need a web connection though, from an existing Wi-Fi or Ethernet network, or even from a 3G/4G modem, if you have one.

The latter option will deliver the weakest performance (unless the 4G/LTE signal is particularly strong), but that's life.

D-Link's AC750 Portable Router and Charger bears the part number of DIR-510L and is called “charger” because it includes a 4000 mAh battery pack inside.

It's rechargeable and, more importantly, can recharge phones and other mobile devices when you're on the road.

Furthermore, if you have full charges on everything, you can use the USB ports for data transfers instead. There's even the mydlink SharePort mobile device app that lets you upload, download, and stream multimedia and documents to a storage drive from anywhere in the world (flash drive, portable SSD, or HDD, anything that can link via USB really).

Finally, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz mobile apps can both act as independent Wi-Fi networks, and you can even set up a guest zone that allows web access to visitors without letting them access the rest of the networked devices.

The D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router and Charger (DIR-510L) has a price of $99.99, or €72.66, according to exchange rates.
