The Benefits of Domain Aliases

When you get popular over the Internet through a domain name or a trademark reflected in a domain name, the possibility appears that other people take advantage of your popularity benefits too by cybersquatting.

For example, they can register a domain name similar to yours with the only difference in the TLD type. Then, they could sell it to you with an high (unjustified) price. Or the cyber squatters could gain a certain traffic for their websites based on a similar domain name with yours.

Due to the fact that domain names are cheap, it is recommended to buy more TLD types like .org, .net or .info alongside .com. The additional domain names could be redirected as aliases to show the content or the website designated by the primary domain name.

If you have a primary domain like "mydomain.com" and you want to define "mydomain.org" as an alias to it, "mydomain.org" domain will have the same properties as "mydomain.com" regarding the DNS and mail. As a consequence, the email sent to the accounts defined on "mydomain.org" will be managed as if it was sent to a "mydomain.com" mail account type. A domain alias can be easily configured from your web hosting account control panel.

Besides the protection against cybersquatting, the usage of multiple domain names pointing to a primary domain name have many other advantages. For example, you can manage the emails from two separate domains mail accounts in the same inbox.

The traffic will be increased for the website indicated by your primary domain name in a direct proportionality with domain popularity. The most important process will be the establishing of the aliases domain names. You should select only the relevant names as variations of the primary domain name in a number corresponding to a certain popularity (of the domain or brand) predicted with an accurate level of certitude.
