Chinese government departments are impacted by the breach

On Wednesday, the Macau Daily Times reported that a telecoms firm of the Macau city of China, CTM, was hacked. The company found that the email services of 34 CTM customers were compromised by the attackers.

The IP addresses used in the attack were traced back to Hong Kong and the United States.

On Thursday, it came to light that some of the impacted CTM customers were actually government departments.

A full-scale investigation has been launched to find the culprit. In the meantime, while they’ve refused to speculate if the incident has anything to do with the United States’ PRISM surveillance program, officials have confirmed that they’ve reached out to the US.

They want to find out if Macau is covered by PRISM.
