On Thursday, the UK’s Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts announced the inauguration of two new Centers for Doctoral Training that would train cyber security graduates. The centers will be based at Royal Holloway, University of London, and the University of Oxford.

A total of £7.5 million ($11.5 million / €8.8 million) have been allocated for the project. Part of the sum comes from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the rest from Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Oxford and Royal Holloway have been selected following a call for proposals issued last summer.

The multi-disciplinary PhD training is aimed at ensuring that graduates will have the skills required to help businesses and governments with research-derived expertise.

Oxford will focus on big data security, real-time security, cyber-physical security, and effective systems verification and assurance.

Provably secure cryptographic systems and protocols, security of telecommunication networks and critical infrastructure, trusted and trustworthy platforms, and organizational processes and socio-technical systems will be topics covered at Royal Holloway.
