A DROID ROM might arrive soon too

A while ago, Internet giant Google announced the launch of a new version of its Android operating system, namely Android 2.2 Froyo, and promised the availability of the solution for a wide variety of handsets in a short period of time, but only Nexus One was updated to the new platform version so far. Apart from that official Froyo software for Nexus One, Android phone fans out there are also able to try out a custom made solution for their handsets, the CyanogenMod-6.0.0 ROM, which recently hit release candidate form.

In addition to the Nexus One ROM, software solutions for two other Android devices from HTC were released in an RC form, namely for HTC Dream and Magic (which landed in the US as the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G handsets). All three solutions are pretty stable, even if only release candidate at the moment. Moreover, it seems that another Android 2.2 update is on its way to be released, this time for a device made by Motorola, the DROID.

These ROM upgrades are not official solutions, and they do not include many applications and services that the official updates do. However, at least when it comes to users of a Dream or Magic handset, they should prove more than welcomed, especially since there are great chances that HTC won't release Android 2.2 updates for them. As for the Nexus One ROM, it comes as an alternative to the official release.

According to a recent post on Cyanogenmod, the solutions were built by professionals, and should be complemented by similar software for more handsets in the near future. However, it should be noted that the installation of these ROMs might not end up as intended at all times, and that users should not go for them unless they are familiar with what needs to be done. In the end, an official update, even if a late one, might prove a better option than unofficial ones.
