Cyanogen wants to convince you to install a custom ROM

Cyanogen is one of the key start-ups to watch out for this year. The company has made public its intentions of finding a way to separate Android from Google and is already taking tiny steps towards achieving this goal.

One of them includes showing off the best features it has to offer to supporters of Android with its latest consumer-friendly Cyanogen OS.

While these features might be familiar to custom ROM aficionados, those who haven’t dabbed into the waters of Android tweaking so far might get their interest piqued by the new series of “Bytes” videos that the company has recently revealed.

Cyanogen familiarizes you with the App Themer

The first video to be released into the wild revolves around the App Themer. Basically, this function lets users theme all of their apps on an individual basis. Not so long ago, Cyanogen themes would only allow to apply the same theme for all apps, but now users can apply a different, separate theme to each app, by virtue of a few taps.

The new feature is available in Cyanogen OS 12, so you too can install it on your device and see how it works.

Cyanogen will continue to tease the new features included in the new OS in the upcoming weeks, so we should expect more videos such as this one to be launched into the wild soon enough.

In recent times, Cyanogen 12 started rolling out for the OnePlus One handset after a long wait, only to be halted after a few hours. Developers wanted to add one extra feature, in the form of “Ok OnePlus” (similar to “Ok Google”) before resuming the official rollout.

Will you take a chance with Cyanogen?

While Cyanogen OS is the consumer-friendly version offered by the custom ROM maker, more advanced Android tinkerers work with CyanogenMod.

Recently, we’ve told you that CyanogenMod 12.2 based on Android 5.1 has become available for mobile devices such as the OnePlus One, Moto G or Nexus 7, and more will follow suit.

So if your device hasn't been updated to Android 5.1 (and chances are it hasn't), you can now get a taste of Google’s latest built by installing a custom ROM. Provided you want to take that chance.
