The upcoming Cyberpunk video game from CD Projekt RED will use a new and extended character customization system, which will be tied in with the plot of the single-player campaign.

Marcin Momot, who is the community manager at CD Projekt RED, stated in an official Question & Answer session that, “As opposed to the regular fantasy set-up with mages, warriors and archers, we’re going for something different. In Cyberpunk, each character role will offer a set of special skills that will impact your stats in many different ways. That’s where the challenge kicks in, we want to create a game where character customization will be strongly tied with the plot.”

The standard for the development team is set by The Witcher series, and CD Projekt RED believes that it has the tools to maintain it.

Momot added, “We definitely want to give players way more freedom with customization of the main protagonist then they had with Geralt in The Witcher series. We are planning on letting them change their statistics, equipment, implants and much more.”

It seems that the development team is using the same core character design system that was introduced in the pen-and-paper version of the game, although it will streamline it and will add information on the options a player can pick.

Cyberpunk takes place in the near future in a setting where the government has developed a number of extensive surveillance programs, which it uses to suppress free speech and keep the population under control.

CD Projekt RED will offer more information on Cyberpunk before the end of the year.

The company is best known for its work on The Witcher series and the way it has used player choice in order to deliver deep narratives and create emotional connections with the various characters of the series.
