The ultra-wide LCD has a curvature radius of 3000 mm

Curved displays still aren't very widespread, especially in “small” sizes. The new model that Samsung put together doesn't qualify as small, exactly, but it's not one of those huge, 100-inch beasts either.

For the most part, curved displays, whether they are LCDs or OLEDs, don't often come in sizes smaller than 50 inches, or even 55 inches.

However, as is always the case with new display technologies, the principles are invariably applied to smaller screens eventually.

We've seen it in 3D and 4K resolution moving from large panels to normal monitors and TVs, and we're seeing it now happening to Ultra-WQHD resolution.

Samsung launches the SE790C curved monitor

This 34-inch LCD has a native resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels, meaning that the aspect ratio is of 21:9. Ultra Wide Screen as it is otherwise known.

The Ultra-Wide display aspect ratio has been cropping up more often lately mostly because there aren't many other new things that display makers can add to their panels. Nothing reasonable from a pricing standpoint in any event.

You'll never hear any of them say so though, and we suppose that some people do like the extra screen space. Ironically though, professional office workers are liable to appreciate it more, since it allows them to multitask easier and more comfortably.

As far as movies go, on the other hand, you'll be hard-pressed to find a title sold on disc or online with that image format. The real cinematic aspect ratio will remain normal widescreen for a good, long time.

Anyway, the Samsung SE790C is also curved. Its curvature is of 3000R, meaning that if the circle sketched by the curvature were to be drawn fully, it would have a radius of 3,000 mm.

The point was to more naturally match the natural curve of the viewer's eyes, creating a viewing experience free of most distortions that would otherwise cause eye strain and reduced comfort, at least over time.

Other specs include a static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 (normally LCDs have an average 1,000:1) and a brightness of 300 cd/m2. As for the viewing angles, they are of 178 degrees. About as wide as they could possibly be, in other words.

Availability and pricing

The Samsung SE790C curved monitor should be up for order soon enough for a price that has yet to be revealed. Picture-by-Picture (PbP) and Picture-in-Picture (PiP) 2.0 are included (can simultaneously connect a PC and game console, or set-top box or whatever else). Four USB 3.0 connectors are included as well.
