The rover switched over to its backup computer, will take a few days for it to "boot up"

The Curiosity rover is marvel of technology, the pinnacle of human engineering achievement. It's also currently in "safe mode" due to some problems with its internal computer.

NASA had to switch over to a backup computer because of the issue and put the rover in a minimal operational state while the problem is being analyzed.

Needles to say, there's no science to be done during this time, which is a shame too since the rover had just started analyzing rock samples from below the surface of Mars, a historical achievement.

A memory problem on the A-side computer which was operating the rover caused it to switch over to the redundant B-side computer.

However, the switch also put it into safe mode and will take several days for it to transition to fully operational mode, during which time scientists will oversee the process and look for problems.

The team is also investigating the problem with the A-side computer in the hope that it can be worked around and that it will serve as a backup computer to the B-side one, which is now taking over.
