Coming in early June

It seems that T-Mobile G1 users who live in the United States will not be able to enjoy the long anticipated Android 1.5 Cupcake update for their handsets this week either, as the mobile phone carrier has just announced that the release of the software has been delayed with at least one week, which places the estimated arrival time of the update in early June.

According to the team, the delay is caused by their intention to ensure that the software is optimized for use on the G1 units on the US market, so that both the handset and its firmware would work perfectly: ”We’re finalizing the build this week to ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery. Therefore, the rollout schedule has been reset by approximately a week, and we expect all G1 customers will have the update by early June.”

Ironically, although the firmware is being developed in the US, it seems that G1 users who live in the UK can already enjoy the new features that Android 1.5 offers them. There is no official explanation as to how T-Mobile UK managed to roll out the update much faster than T-Mobile US. According to some voices on the web, the delay might be caused by the fact that the wireless carrier is working on organizing the deployment of the update, and not on some small optimizations that it could include, considering that the firmware reportedly works great in the UK.

Hopefully, the T-Mobile US team will manage to finalize their preparations as soon as possible and the Android 1.5 Cupcake update will come to G1 users there, even if with a delay of a few weeks, since, as we already learned, there are a wide range of improvements included in the package. Those who haven't had the chance to take a look at the feature list of Cupcake can find it here.
