The Linux platform is getting more interesting for game developers and publishers and it looks that it's going to become even more attractive now that CRYENGINE is coming to Linux.

The developers from famous studio Crytek said a while ago that they intended to port their engine to the Linux platform, but very little information has been provided so far. In fact, Crytek went through some financial problems and the future of the Linux port was brought into question, but that might not be the case anymore.

Crytek is a studio that has only made triple-A titles so far and users might know them for games like Far Cry, the Crysis series, and the recent Ryse: Son of Rome. It is unlikely that these titles will land on Linux even after CRYENGINE is published, but we can hope that future games based on this technology will see Linux versions as well.

Crytek is making a push for Linux

"CRYENGINE is the first all-in-one development solution with truly scalable computation and benchmark graphics technologies. With CRYENGINE, developers are fully equipped to create standout game experiences, using the engine behind games like Ryse: Son of Rome and Crysis series."

"The Famous CRYENGINE Sandbox editor is a production proven, third-generation real-time tool suite designed and built by AAA Developers. All development features of a CRYENGINE game can be produced, edited and played immediately with the 'what you see is what you play' (WYSIWYP) system. The engine deals with the instant conversion and optimization of assets in real-time, enabling cross-platform changes to all elements of the game creation process. This increases the speed and quality of development, while significantly reducing the risk of creating multi-platform games," reads the Steam entry.

CRYENGINE is by no means a free engine. There are all sorts of plans that users and developers can adopt, but it's also not really expensive. The good news is that there is just a monthly fee and there is no royalty tax that needs to be paid.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the Steam database and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam Database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service. Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch and they should be released on all supported platforms at once, but there is no guarantee.

More information about CRYENGINE can be found on Steam.
