The expectations of the player base are currently too high

Cevat Yerli, the chief executive officer of developer Crytek, says that the recently launched Crysis 3 is his company’s masterpiece and that the expectations of the gaming public have evolved since the first title in the series was launched.

He tells Gamasutra that, “The relative impact that Crysis 3 has created is lower than what Crysis 1 did. But I would think at any level it’s better than Crysis 2, and it’s certainly still better than Crysis 1. People remember Crysis 1 much bigger than it was, because it had a high impact.”

The CEO believes that Crysis 3 is the best title in the franchise, but reception has been somewhat critical because fans are expecting a much bigger leap in quality, both in terms of gameplay and graphics, than Crytek can deliver.

Yerli adds, “The markets are down. People’s expectations are much more radical than the current generation of games are doing.”

Crysis 3 takes players back to New York, which is covered with a biodome and mixes traditional human architecture with a newly developed jungle environment.

The Nanosuit is once again the star of the game, allowing players to enhance their abilities in order to tackle a number of tactical challenges.

The stealth aspect of the experience has been enhanced via a new bow that gamers can use without breaking out of their suit’s invisibility mode.

Some long-term fans have complained that Crysis 3 fails to recapture the open world structure of the original and is more concerned with spectacular set-pieces than with giving players freedom.

Crysis 3 can be played on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The team is currently working on a free-to-play shooter called Warface, which is confirmed for the PC and might also be linked to next-generation consoles.
