The team at Paradox Development Studios is using the Gamescom 2014 event to announce that the next expansion for Crusader Kings II is called Charlemagne and is designed to introduce a range of new features while expanding the time frame for the grand strategy experience.

This is the seventh expansion for the game and the team has decided to allow gamers to control more of their chosen country's history while also giving them more ways to influence its long term destiny.

Paradox says, "This expansion moves the game back almost a 100 years to 769 AD and will offer a unique new story driven narrative about the rise of Charlemagne and The Holy Roman Empire. It’s more of what you’ve come to know and love from Paradox Development Studios."

Charlemagne was one of the greatest figures of early Medieval history and he managed to united much of known Europe while dealing with a variety of external threats and consolidating his own empire with new legal and economic systems.

In the new expansion for Crusader Kings II players will be able to start their games in 669 if they wish to and to experience a series of long chains of events that talk about Charlemagne, his achievements and his influence on history.

Annually gamers will get a chronicle created in the style of Saxon documents, which will talk about their exploits and about other major events in order to make it easier to track the evolution of the game world.

Dozens of new cultures are being added to Crusader Kings II via Charlemagne and there are new systems that allow for the creation of custom kingdoms and empires, while other titles can be created from a lower tiered one.

Flags and names for the new entities can also be created by the player, making it easier for him to create a unique dynasty that can take over much of Europe.

Crusader Kings II is also getting a new system that will simulate both climate and seasonal transitions and the effects that they had on political entities and on their subjects.

Finally the Regency system will get an overhaul to make it more realistic and give players more options when their ruler dies without an heir that has reached the age to lead.

The Charlemagne expansion will also be accompanied by a major patch for Crusader Kings II and at the moment it does not have an official launch date.
