Charlemagne is an ambitious expansion for the already complex Crusader Kings II and the team at Paradox Development Studios is ready to offer details on the tribal system and the way it is designed to offer a more accurate representation of the way Europe was organized for the earlier 769 start date.

On the official forums, Johan Lerstrom, the project leader, explains that “Government in Crusader Kings 2 has long been tied to the Holdings, Republics have Cities as their capitals and Theocracies have Churches, but the Castles have been sort of a catch all holding that everyone else has been using, not so for the Tribes of Crusader Kings any more.”

A new tribal holding is being introduced in Charlemagne, set to represent all those inhabitants who are not living in any other type of holding.

Because of their catch-all nature, their output of both tax money and manpower is multiplied by half the number of empty slots left for holdings.

The fact that tribes lack access to cities means that they will have less traditional resources to influence the world of Crusader Kings II with, and the studio has allowed them to focus on Prestige as they seek to rule the world around them.

Paradox explains that “All the troop buildings in your tribal holdings cost you prestige instead of gold, and with enough prestige you can rally the men of your Tribe with a special decision, beware however, you still have to pay your troops, and money is tight for the Tribes.”

A move towards civilizations and patch notes

Tribes that want to turn towards civilization in the future need to get through a few steps, all of which require money that can be obtained via raiding, and there’s also a requirement to push technology forward on a number of tracks.

Vassals also work differently, as they act as allies in time of war and tend to be able to say no if they do not agree with the goals of the conflict.

The Charlemagne expansion for Crusader Kings II will be launched via digital distribution on October 14, and the development team will also launch a free patch at the same time for all those who own the grand strategy title.

Fans will also be able to visit the official forums in order to take a look at the official patch notes, which are still subject to change but do offer a good way of evaluating the changes coming to Crusader Kings II.
