CodeWeavers, through Josh DuBois, had the pleasure of informing us today, March 19, about the immediate availability for download of the CrossOver 14.1.0 software update, a commercial application that allows users of the Linux and Mac OS X operating systems to install and use Windows apps.

CrossOver 14.1.0 is a powerful and easy-to-use graphical front-end for the famous Wine application that lets you deploy almost any software designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system (XP, 7, Vista, and 8) in Linux kernel-based and Mac OSes. The new release includes a great number of changes, bringing support for more Windows apps.

The application can now be installed under Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

Probably the most important change brought by CrossOver 14.1.0 is the support for the newly released Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr) Linux operating system, as CodeWeavers updated some internal components and package dependencies. Moreover, the CrossOver Software Installer has been optimized to run faster at startup.

“I am delighted to announce that CodeWeavers has just released CrossOver 14.1.0 for both Mac OS X and Linux,” says Josh DuBois in the email announcement received by Softpedia today. “CrossOver 14.1.0 has important bug fixes for both Mac and Linux users.”

A couple of changes for Mac OS X are there as well, and better application support

In addition to the above, a bug has been fixed for Linux systems to no longer make CrossOver fail when attempting to open links in the distribution’s native web browser, and a new option has been added, called --destdir, designed to allow for easier package generation under the Gentoo Linux operating system.

The Mac OS X platform received some changes as well, such as two bug fixes, one for application launchers and another one for the window size of a maximized window. Greater application support is now implemented in CrossOver 14.1.0, as it is possible to install the .NET Framework 3.5 again, it’s now possible to change fonts in Outlook 2003.

Last but not least, certain websites are now better supported by the built-in web browser of CrossOver, the Equation Editor of the Word 2003 and Word 97 applications are better supported, a clickable hyperlink is now generated automatically when typing a URL into an email in Outlook 2003, and a couple of bugs have been fixed in Outlook 2010 and ATOK.
