Developers leveraging the Eclipse IDE (integrated development environment) or using non-Windows platforms, such as Unix, Linux and Mac OS X, will be able to turn to Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server for their projects following the integration of SourceGear’ Teamprise Client Suite. The Redmond company announced that all Teamprise products had been acquired from SourceGear and that devs using the Teamprise Client Suite would be able to find all functionality integrated into Visual Studio 2010, the next iteration of its development platform and tools expected on March 22, 2010.

According to the software giant, the move was done in order to increase support for developers working in heterogeneous environments. Prior to this announcement, Microsoft indicated that work was in progress to enhance support for the Eclipse IDE itself. By taking cross-platform support for Visual Studio 2010 to the next level, Microsoft ensures that developers running Visual Studio Team Foundation Server will be able take advantage of advanced integration in mixed-source environments, as well as cut back the time and complexity of application development.

“We know our customers face daily challenges with management, collaboration and development in heterogeneous environments. The industry must take steps to make interoperability a stronger business asset for our customers,” explained S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft. “With the acquisition of the Teamprise assets, we’re taking a step forward on this journey, providing customers with a viable cross-platform development solution that will help produce business results more quickly.”

With the marriage between Team Foundation Server and Teamprise Client Suite, Microsoft is making application development for heterogeneous environments possible via a single solution rather than through the use of multiple and disconnected toolsets. The specific assets acquired by Microsoft as part of the Teamprise Client Suite include: Teamprise Plug-in for Eclipse, Teamprise Explorer, and Teamprise Command-Line Client.

“For nearly four years, we have made it our mission to deliver strong, best-of-breed tools to our customers for cross-platform development,” added Corey Steffen, general manager, Teamprise, a division of SourceGear. “By joining forces with Microsoft, we see an opportunity to further our mission — and customers’ benefits — by fostering joint innovation between Teamprise solutions and Team Foundation Server.”

The Redmond company currently plans to offer the Teamprise technology concomitantly with the Visual Studio 2010 wave. Developers will have a choice between jointly purchasing the Teamprise Client Suite along with Team Foundation Server 2010, or subscribe to MSDN as the portal will feature Teamprise Client Suite as part of the subscription. Devs already owning MSDN subscriptions will see the new solutions added when they become available.
