One of the phishing lures reportedly being delivered to users at the moment informs them of a 90% discount for products on Amazon; accessing the link in the message leads to a fraudulent page that asks for login information.

The email purports to be from the Amazon support team and claims to have come as a result of a random selection of customers who are about to celebrate their 20th birthday.

More than one million individuals have been chosen to receive the discount and only ten thousand have won a coupon providing a 90% price cut for any product sold by Amazon.

At the end of the message, the cybercriminals included a link for claiming the coupon. According to OnlineThreatAlerts, the URL leads to a phishing website that instructs the user to log into the Amazon account. Once the credentials have been entered, they are automatically sent to the criminals.

The message is crafted to incite the potential victim to click on the malicious link immediately, as the link of the coupon is set to expire in 24 hours; its validity, however, extends over a period of 30 days.

The message has “scam” written all over it, but this does not mean that there aren’t plenty of users to fall into the trap.
