Payment card info requested, victims risk financial losses

Most of the times, cybercriminals do not show much creativity, but every once in a while they come up with a lure that makes one think otherwise.

One of the latest tricks they try to play on Facebook users is to warn them that their account will be shut down permanently unless they confirm their identity in a security check.

The reason behind the request is that “many people use false identities and false information in their account picture,” and a validation operation on all users has been initiated.

According to Hoax Slayer, a variation of the scam is to claim that forbidden content and suspicious activity has been discovered in the Facebook account of the recipient of the message. The same identity verification motive is served to fool victims into providing credentials for the social network account and payment card information.

If the victim believes the claims and engages in the fake identity verification, they will lose access to Facebook and are definitely going to suffer financial losses.

One of the fake forms includes fields for details like full name, email address, birthday, Facebook password, security question and its answer.

A second online form is designed to collect card information, from number, type of card, expiration date, CVV (card verification value) and billing address to complete postal address.

All this information is highly sensitive and can easily be used to perform fraudulent transactions in the name of the victim.
