Iberian lynxes are currently listed as a critically endangered species, which is why it need not come as a surprise that researchers are ready and willing to do just about anything in order to make sure that these animals do not end up falling off the biodiversity map.

Thus, a female Iberian lynx has recently had both her ovaries and some embryos located in its oviducts removed by a team of conservationists who are hopeful that the embryos they obtained in this manner will one day save the species from extinction.

As Live Science informs us, their plan is to find a surrogate mother for these embryos. The researchers believe that a Eurasian lynx female would be the best candidate.

Just for the record, the female lynx left without its ovaries and embryos by the scientists had difficulties giving birth.

Therefore, using a surrogate mother for these embryos was the best option that the conservationists had at their disposal.
