Cristiano Ronaldo will not play for Manchester United in their friendly against Oxford United this evening. The player was dropped by Sir Alex Ferguson earlier yesterday following the police's advice. According to the head of police in Thames Valley, Ronaldo's playing against Oxford would instigate thousands of English fans to violence.
Actually, the Oxford United chairman also warned that the Portuguese presence on the field would produce a violent reaction from the fans. Apparently, more than 4000 seats were expected to be taken by angry England supporters. The Oxford officials told Manchester to reconsider playing Cristiano Ronaldo in the match.
"We have liaised with both clubs. At present there are no identified risks. It will remain a police-free game", stated a Thames Valley policeman, after being told that Ronaldo will not be playing against Oxford tonight.
And Sir Alex Ferguson chose the right way to do it. He told the Portuguese to stay home and enjoy the game on TV. The Scottish coach also dropped him before the Amsterdam tournament, because he was not fully fit. The Portuguese's opener will be, therefore, delayed until Manchester's next clash.
Despite the fact that Wayne Rooney officially forgave Ronaldo for his alleged "mistake" in the World Cup quarterfinal - Ronaldo told the referee to give Wayne a well-deserved red card - the English fans are still angry with the Portuguese. Earlier last month, his residence in Manchester got vandalized.
