Basic FAQ
Limit Break system.: Continuously during battle there is a sort of slot machine rolling with three channels. If you match two it goes into a "Modulation Phase". Each slot machine field is a picture of a certain character. If you match them you get a limit break specific to that character, or a level up on magic or materia. Some of them cast a sort of berserk so you always get Critical hits, while others deal damage with their respective little cutscenes. I don't know much Japanese, but this is basically how I found it all to function. As far as I know, you can only play as Zack.
Summons
Summons are summoned through your DMW after you get them. To do that, for the most part, after you fight one, head to your Missions and go the one that reads, in Katakana, "materia hunter" and just do the missions in that section for a bit and eventually you should fight the summon, and the DMW will get unlocked.

Here's a trailer of the best PSP game I've ever played:
I'm sorry but i have to say this. I have been a fan of the final fantasy series since the early 90's. But ever since the Merg with enix the series has become GARBAGE. The older games were WAY better, these new games just flat out fucking suck. There a disgrace to the series. The ON LY thing they have going for them is the graphics but everything else is trash. I remember when final fantasy VII came out there was people lining up outside of the stores to buy it, but after final fantasy X the games went down hill.
FIrst of all what happen to the leveling up system???? Whats with these stupid GRID thingies or these slot reels???? WHat ever happened to gaining exp and Leveling up??? And whats with all the stupid side quests??? Try puting more hours into the actuall story line rather then a bunch a stupid tasks. "OH no the worlds comming to an end, but hey lets go do a buncha stupid shit just for the hell of it." THats the first thing on the mind of a hero. Why is it that with the new FF games and Kingdom Hearts u have to gather a bunch of junk ass items to get the best items in the game? Thats stupid. If ur going to have side quest let it be quest to find the best equpiment which is needed to save the world rather then gathering junk. Oh, and the world map, why is the world map gone? THat was ONE of the key things too because thats were u flew your airship. Then again we dnt even get to do that anymore because square enix for sum stupid ass reason took that out as well. Where is Hironobu Sakaguchi? Why is he allowing this shit to happen to his game? Final fantasy use to be the greatest series ever but now its garbage. When final fantasy came out for nintendo it was Sakaguchi's last shot and also a big risk seeing it was the first of its kind, the name of the game came from the fact that it was his final fantasy. That one risk gave birth to the greatest game series ever made. But now its just a shitty produced game that only sells because of its name. Hironobu needs to take controlle of his game and FIX it because whoever produces the game now is a total fucking idiot out to make a quick buck by soiling the name of a great game series. Its like the Dragon Ball series. Great series, great story, awesome indept characters when Akira Toriyami and fun amation had controlle. Now look at Dragon Ball GT. Not writtien by Akira and produced by a diffirent company...TOTAL GARBAGE. Square enix needs to stop fucking up final fantasy by adding and trying out this new shit and relying on graphics to make up for shitty ass game play. The ONLY some what decent game they have come out with is kingdom hearts 2.
Final Fantasy VII and VIII were ok but totally over rated, IX was good because it went back to basics. X X-2 XI XII crystal chronicals tatics advance fucking sucked. Lately the only good ones to come out are the updated and remakes of the original games. We want somthing old skool that is fresh.

.... I totally Disagree ..
The games are still fun.
So what if they added a few things to it such as gathering more items and stuff?
It just maks the game that much harder to beat which makes it that much more fun.
Obviously ... yor just to lazy to actually try to beat the entire game.

I totally agree with you, I miss the real RPG's where it was all about the story and not about the action. Oh well =(

First of all, thank you very much Square-Enix. I totally love this game even more. Just by the graphic, the cutscenes and the character's dialog and the animation, score 50%. The rest of the other 50% goes to the storyline.
You see, if you ever play FF7 and remember it's storyline well enough, you'll eventually find out that SQUARESOFT seems to has already planned for a Crisis Core game 10 years back! The secret it reveals now, the hint it left behind back then, they all link up perfectly in Crisis Core logically. How the hell did they come up with this plot? You need a really really fantasy mind man.
The script written for all the characters are extremely nice! Very well animated too. It made them almost like some real living characters who owns a unique characteristic of themselves.
in short, I give this game a 10/10, a 100%, despite the long winded missions, but I know they are there to create reasons for spending gills, SP and to level up Zack, and most of all, to let fans like me have a reason to keep on playing it. You know when the game ends, it kinda hurts. It's like something is taken away from your life. Something will be missed! It's a Final Fantasy Game from Squaresoft. I thought about it, how long will I have to wait again for their next FF game?
Lastly, to Zack, I now know you are a hero. You are somebody with an untold story behind FF7. I came to know you better now. Your legacy lives on with Cloud. Your dreams, your honour are greatly taken care of and fulfilled. So here we go, "Embrace your dreams, and whatever happens, protect your honour... AS SOLDIER!!!
Come and GET IT!!!

I'm sure Hironobu is NOT happy with what is happening and I believe this is why he left. First off the "company" obviously wants to take final fantasy in completely off the wall directions as this appears to be the trend with movies as well, Something tells me Sakaguchi had a problem with using just blonde hair blue eyed Protagonists and preferred to use something not as western stereotype oriented. If you ask me, final fantasy died when sakaguchi and uematsu left. Sakaguchi was the brain of final fantasy with his incredible storylines and development and Uematsu was the heart with his godlike musical ability.

well I have to agree w/you for the most part, as a long time FF fan. Even Kingdom Hearts II was pissing me off with all the damn cutscenes. Crisis Core is a beautiful game in japanese, the english version is horrible, end of story. I:m glad Zacks story was finally told, its a fun game, but damn I hate the slot-reel . I dont want to summon at random. Also no Limit break and yes, no damn leveling-up anymore. I could write 20 pages on my opinion of the way FF games have changed, but the fans dont have any real control over that anyway. FF X was barely passable, after that FF turned to s***(although others disagree, Ive heard people ranting about how they choose FF 12 over FF 7 as their fav game, wtf) Anyway thanks for saying what (most of us) are all thinking ^_^

you made some good points, older FFs were more fun to play. i think its the new "ActionRPG" mode thats slowly killing what rpgs used to be. They tried to make rpgs fun for everyone by removing everithing essential in rpgs like EXP, world map,turn-based battles, medieval universe with magic and dragons, instead they put guns and motor vehicles, everithing real rpg'ers dont want but everyone else does so they can sell more games. I got to disagree with you one one thing though : FFX (NOT X-2) got the greatest story ever wrote for a video game, i kinda feel ashame to say this but FFX is the only videogame that made me shed tears the second time i played it, the way Yuna slowly walks to her death while smiling along the way and everyone around her feels powerless, saddest story ive ever seen and theres no happy ending too, characters are lame but the story rocks

I agree that the final fantasy series has gone to crap. I miss the old leveling system. Hopefully the next in the series will be better. It was nice though that crissis core filled in some blanks in the story line of ff7

I agree with you on the fact that the original final fantasy stlye was great but i really like crisis core, i don't like the fact that you can't summon whenever you want but it's still a great game. I also HATE tatics and the crystal crap and i wish they would make some original style ff games for the ds psp and xbox 360

I 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 DISAGREE ff7 crisis core rocks so go to HELL ppl who say diffeintly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your comments are unthoughtful.
The games are different, dont compare them to how Final Fantasy VII was. I agree I miss certain aspects, like the exp system, and the LB gauge but these aren't things that should put you off playing the through the story mode.
I am obcessed with FFVII and I wont be put off by a 'different' combat system just because I haven't used it before.
I do wonder how they would go about fitting a game that was as good as FFVII on a UMD, oh wait they wouldnt that's why its a portable console.
Stop comparing classics to new games and start experiencing this masterpiece of PORTABLE gameplay.
Great review by the way, completely spot on.

I totally agree with you. Sure there were some things that I miss from the old Final Fantasys, but I think it is great the company is heading in a new direction and trying new things out. And people like him are to ignorant to understand what they are trying to do. Crisis Core is a great game, and everyone that has played FF7 should agree with me. FF7 leaves you wondering what in the hell was going on but Crisis Core answered nearly every one of my questions. I agree that 10, 10-2, crystal cronicles, and 12 weren't all that great, but everyone makes mistakes right?

What are most of you talking about? Final Fantasy Kicks a**! I must admit though, ff-x and ff-x2 sucked real bad and ff-12 isnt good either. My favorite so far has to be ff crisis core for the psp. It really explains the plot for ff7 and final fantasy advent childeren, for us guys who havent played the original ff7.

@missgirl: I agree with you for the most part...but this whole 'the language changes how good the game is' is crap. The game is as good in English as it is in Japanese, I mean, cmon, it's a few syllable swaps. This is a GAME not a freakin' opera.
Comment #5 by: TheHashCloud on 21 Jul 2008, 02:27 UTC
I'm so tired of this B.S. about what game is greater...I believe that our views on FF depend on when we first experienced the game. If your as pissed as Hirinobu- San about the state of affairs at SquareEnix then check out his new FF called Blue Dragon on Xbox 360 from his NEW company Mistwalker. And to those Enix haters: go play Dragon Warrior IV and then come back to the boards because u obviously have no experience with that company. In the ugly words u don't wanna hear: they feed u the S!#@ u've wanted but don't want to admit: a world FULL of FF. What's funny is that we all know that the tday FFXIII drops ww'll all be off work and school that day :)
to be honest crisis core story line is good , only downfall to it is the side mission other wises its awesome.
the thing i didnt like with other final fantasy storys mainly some of the orginials was that it always was about crystals or the end of the world or something i mean look final fantasy has been here for ages its normal for them to run out of ideas i mean what other ways could make an ew story line which isnt save the world etc i mean crisis core was diffrent becuase it was more about the character then oh save the world and stuff , that happens in FF7.
i mean who cares if you dont like the game dont post about it then.
The only thing i tihnk they should do is remake Final fantasy orginals but with todays grahics because the way it is now on game boy /ds makes me think its just for kids. ( not FOR kids but looks like becuase of the cartoon like appearance)
Hahahaha. Those that have really played the original game knows that FF7CC is a master piece and that cannot be argue. The game is simple, fun and has a great story (they didn't have to work to much on the story, it's all in FF7).
Graphics are astonishing and the battle system is damn good that you cannot stop playing for several hours (which is a problem as we are playing on a portable device).
The new system might be a little different but if you really knew how it works you would be amazed on how good does it work (I am a programmer, believe I know what I’m talking).
Those who don't like this game are not real FF Fans; there is no way that someone won't enjoy this game.
It is easy to talk badly about the game if you compare it to FF7 or FF6 for that matter; Remember THESE ARE MASTER PIECES no game can look the same, and on this case a can dare to say that for the new generation of Square Enix games this is one of those MASTER PIECES.
All fans are waiting for FF13 that promise to be an excellent game (also to erase from the memory of the player games like FFX, X2 or 12).
I'm sure that we al be very happy with the result and also we will see FF7 remake (because that's the new tendency of Square Enix), we all wait for it.
Look, guys... I love Crisis Core. But it happens to be the only FF game I've played. I don't really have access to the other ones.
I, unfortunately, have been exposed to too many high graphic games, so when I went to play the original FF7 I ended up losing interest. I know it sucks, but that's how it was.
I like Crisis Core due to the back story. I like the Graphics, the music, and the plot.
So sorry that it's not the original save the world thing. I can't stand that kind of stuff, I need something with more of a human feel.
And I like Kingdom Hearts. I like cute things. But I like action and adult things too.
So I don't think it's a matter of what game is better, like what was mentioned above. I think it's just a matter of tast.
Hi!!!!!
I don't know how to put in those cheat codes that you posted for final fantasy (crisis core ).
Can you kindly help me how to put in those..
Thanks
Okay i myself have not finished the game "Crisis Core" but o am loving it so far. I love it when a game challenges me and gives me something new. i remember playing Dirge of cerebus and thinking "OMG A THIRD PERSON SHOOTER FOR FINAL FANTASY THIS RULES!!!"
I had to rush through the game unfortunatly and finish it as fast as possible... i couldnt enjoy it like i did the many other final fantasy games i had played in the past. Final Fantasy VII was my all time favorite game in the world and it had the greatest plot twist in any game i have ever played. i myself couldnt stand the kindom hearts games and will never waste my money or time on those again. but with me you slap a final fantasy title on a game i will play it and most likly like it...
now on tho crisis core. they finally had a decent name for a guy main character which i loved. i am beginning to understand why sepheroth did what he did and the combat is... interesting...
those slots are useful and make life much easier but at times that i dont need it at all i will get the limits and also thej summoning system sucks... it should have been left be like in final fantasy VII. but the cinamatics more than make up for the flaws in the game. they are absolutly amazing...
well there is my opinion

where do you enter the codes at the top of this page. do you need a game shark or something.
i am trying to find some codes or some thing to help me i am at the end of the game with three hp pluses on with 6000 in life. haveing a hard time beating the boss. i dont hit hard enuff i only take 4000 with lighting.
at first sight i thought the game was trash but after much play i relized there was exp hidding in the background for your levels. also why complain about the missions its more content for the people complain about the storyline being crap...not to mention if you find the game to easy play hard if this is still to easy for you play a real game such as monster hunter freedom 2 all the way through...unless your a storyline fanatic but all i gotta say is that final fantasy 7 crisis core was good and makes me feel better about final fantasy 12 :_(
i kind of agree but not really. i think that ff7 anf ff8 are the two best games out of all the ff series, because they had an amazing storyline and even tho ff7 didnt have the best graphic ever the character plot and development made up for it..also ff7 : crisis core was amazing! i loved it! but i think it was in ff-X where all those slots and stuff came in and ugh! i hated it! it was really confusing at first and even when i knew how to use it properly i disliked it alot! also all those side quests are really fun but on a few of the games they OVERDID it...i think they should have put more time into added to the main plot and storyline rather thatn sidequests. but over all i think the FF series is pretty good tho some of the games need a bit of tuning.
Hi i've had crisis core 4 over a year but havin to beat all the side quest and other bull ive just finished it today. But i was well pleased other than the exp factor. Ive played all the ff7 titles and even seen advent children this just made me wanna play ff7 again. And i hope that on future titles that they'll have an option of Rpg or Action rpg i mean if were shellin out 60 bucks we shoudl have a choice right?
I totally agree with you. These games have lost the novelty they had. This stuff about no world map. Man, I loved the world maps on the older FF . It was beautiful to roam around and choose where to go, roaming the world even without temporarily following the story line, was an excellent side quest in itself.
Forgive me for asking if this already has been asked, but If I haven't played Final Fantasy 7, would I be lost playing this one? I never got a chance back in the days of PS1 to play 7 but after playing more recent entries and then Dissidia on PSP topped off with the fact that this game looks beautiful, I am curious.
