The Creative Assembly, as the developer, and SEGA, as the publisher, have announced that they are working on creating and launching a new video game based around the Alien science fiction universe, set to be launched exclusively on gaming consoles.

The developer has not talked about specific consoles on which the experience will be delivered, but it's a good bet that the best experience will arrive on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and that a version for the Wii (or possibly even its successor) might also be created.

Creative Assembly has said that it is opening up a new space for the development team that will be working on the new Aliens game and that the studio will have to grow to close to 200 people in order to handle the work load before the end of the year.

It's not clear when the new Aliens game is launched and whether it will be a pure shooter or will aim to blend in some other genres.

SEGA has picked up the rights to the Alien video game franchise from Twentieth Century Fox in 2006 and since then it has struggled to developed titles based on it.

Obsidian was initially announced as developing an Aliens-powered role-playing game, but the project was canceled at some point during 2009.

Gearbox, the team that has launched Borderlands, has announced that it would be creating a first-person shooter with team elements called Aliens: Colonial Marines, using the Unreal Engine 3 technology, but no concrete news about the project was offered in quite some time.

Gearbox says, “In regards to Aliens: Colonial Marines, we are still excited about this is project and we are still very much working on it. We know everyone is excited for it and we really can’t wait to talk about it,” but has not specified a launch window for its game.
