The next game in the long-running Total War series moves back to Ancient Rome and the developers say that they are revisiting the setting mainly because of its popularity with the player base and the constant requests from fans.

Al Bickham, the studio communication manager at The Creative Assembly, has told VG247 that, “every time we release a Total War game, or a piece of DLC, people have always gone, ‘That’s great…where’s Rome 2?’ So it’s the game that the player base really wants.”

The developer believes that, at the moment, the Total War team is better prepared, both in terms of resources and technology available, to go back to Rome and deliver the game that it wanted to create when it first approached it back in 2004.

The setting is very complex when it comes to both military strategy and societal decisions and changes and the team is researching them all in order to make sure that Rome 2 is more than simply a series of battles and city development screens.

Bickam added, “it’s not just single, unique events that come along and you get a choice of this, or a choice of that. Now, dilemmas still ask you to make a decision, but depending on the choices you make, and the way you play the game, you will trigger consequential dilemmas along the line.”

Rome 2 is designed to also offer more options during the actual battles, with players now able to bring in both land and naval assets to bear at the same time and offering more tactical options in all engagements.

The game will also introduce a new game engine that will do justice to the Ancient World.

Total War: Rome 2 will be launched exclusively on the PC during next year and a rumor suggests that it will be available during October.
