Making a custom Ubuntu operating system is not very difficult

Ubuntu Mini Remix, a fully working Ubuntu LiveCD containing only the minimal set of software that allows users to build their own Ubuntu distributions, is now at version 14.04.

The Linux ecosystem is full of Ubuntu-based distributions, but building such a Linux OS is not as hard as you might think, especially if you have the proper tools – in this case Ubuntu Mini Remix. Users don't need to be programmers (although it's useful) in order to build a custom Ubuntu OS.

“You want to build your own Ubuntu based livecd, having the complete control over the installed software but you don't know where to start? Minibuntu is here to help you! Ubuntu Mini Remix is a fully working Ubuntu livecd containing only the minimal set of software to make the system work.”

“After downloading Ubuntu Mini Remix you can use Ubuntu Customization Kit, Reconstructor or any other tool to remaster the ISO and add the software/configurations you want, building your own Ubuntu based livecd,” reads the official website.

As the version of the distribution implies, Ubuntu Mini Remix is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, but there is no other relation with Ubuntu or Canonical, so don't expect any official support if anything goes wrong.

Any user trying to customize their operating system will also need to study the documentation a little bit, because this is an easy process but it still needs some attention.

Also, it is worth noting that this is the last version of Ubuntu Mini Remix that will use the tool Ubuntu Builder. The developer of this interesting application said that he might not continue making the software for much longer.

This is probably the only OS of its kind for Ubuntu systems and there are very few other distributions that will provide the same kind of functionality. The closest is probably Arch Linux, but even that one is pretty far off.

All in all, if you try to use Ubuntu Mini Remix, you will need to give it time, but in the end it is likely that you will end up with a very cool-looking system that has everything that you want from a Linux distribution.

You can use it either way, by writing it to a DVD or USB, although the USB solution is a lot faster to begin with and it’s easier to save the work afterwards. You can download Ubuntu Mini Remix 14.04 right now from Softpedia.
