Many people asked about that very nice Ubuntu theme, which is actually a mockup, and they wanted to have such a beauty on their desktops. Therefore, this guide will teach you how to create your own "sexylicious" Ubuntu desktop! In other words, we will pimp your desktop and change its looks: | | | from this | to this |
Requirements:OK... we will need some ingredients for this task, so make sure you get them all from the following links: The Dark GNOME theme (for a dark desktop, like in the screenshot above) nouveXT 2 icon theme Gaia Siberia Metacity theme Softpedia's GNOME background (save it in /usr/share/nautilus/patterns) Alternative GTK theme: Murrina Lemon Graphite (for a light desktop, see the Firefox screenshot below). Install AWNAs you can see from the screenshot above (the right one), we will use AWN (Avant Window Navigator) to give a heart to the Ubuntu desktop. Follow the instructions below to properly install AWN in your system: Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources and enter your password when asked. A new window appears, click the second tab "Third-Party Software", then click the 'Add' button and paste in the new window that will appear, the following lines (one by one): For Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)CODE deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main
For Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)CODE deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
Now click the 'Add Source' button and, immediately after, the 'Close' button of the main window. It will ask you if you want to reload the information about available software. Click 'Reload' and wait for the Software Sources window to close. Open a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and paste the following command: For Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)CODE sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr awn-manager-bzr
For Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)CODE sudo apt-get install awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk
Hit the Y key when asked, and complete the installation. To run AWN, hit ALT+F2 and type: CODE avant-window-navigator
WARNING: Be aware that AWN will appear over
your GNOME panel, therefore you should move the panel in the upper part of the desktop before launching AWN!Magic TricksGood, now we have AWN installed, all we need next is to get rid of those old GNOME panels and add some very nice icons and a sexy theme. But first, let's delete those old GNOME panels, because this is the goal of this guide after all: to replace the old GNOME panels with a futuristic one! ATTENTION: Before you delete the panels, be sure to remove from them all the applets! It is extremely important to remove all the applets and let the panels "naked" for the AWN dock to perform properly!Delete the alternative GNOME panel. If you have two panels, the one from the upper side of the desktop is the one I mean! Now comes the tricky part, because the remaining panel can't be deleted. So, go to System -> Preferences -> Sessions, click the second tab "Current Session". Click once on the gnome-panel entry and then hit the 'Remove' button to delete the last remaining panel. Then, click on the 'Session Options' tab and check the "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" option and hit the 'Remember currently running applications' button. Close the Sessions window. You can now add the Dark Theme (be aware that it will ask you to apply a different font from the default GNOME one, so do as it says), the nuoveXT icon theme and the Gaia Siberia Metacity theme. Drag and drop all three (one by one), after you've downloaded them from the above links, in the "Appearance Preferences" window (right click on desktop -> Change Desktop Background). After you've installed all of these nice ingredients, select the Dark theme from the "Theme" tab and hit the 'Customize' button, so you can apply the Window Border (Gaia Siberia) and the Icons (nuoveXT). The background image for Nautilus can be added from Edit -> Backgrounds and Emblems. Drag and drop it from the list into the Nautilus window! NOTE: Remember to check the "Automatically start AWN on login" option from the General tab of the AWN Manager (System -> Preferences -> Awn Manager). Also, from there you can add software shortcuts and very nice applets!Below you can see the Sexylicious Ubuntu desktop in action, with the GNOME HD wallpaper and the Murrina Lemon Graphite theme. Credits: We would like to thank reacocard for the up-to-date AWN repository and all the kind developers for providing such nice themes and icons for the GNOME desktop!

| Comment #1.1 by: Marius Nestor on 18 Mar 2008, 22:16 GMT | No, AWN doesn't replace Compiz.... AWN needs Compiz to run... that's all. It doesn't change a thing... and Compiz will preserve its effects! |

| Comment #3 by: Loser on 23 Mar 2008, 12:55 UTC | reply to this comment | I messed up, I have no panels or anything at start up I only have terminal program running. I think as a total noob I'll have to reinstall Ubuntu. Any suggestions? |
| Comment #3.1 by: Marius Nestor on 23 Mar 2008, 15:07 GMT | I think that you forgot to add the AWN to the startup programs list...
NOTE: Remember to check the "Automatically start AWN on login" option from the General tab of the AWN Manager (System -> Preferences -> Awn Manager).
Make sure that option is checked! You can't miss it :) Then logout and log back in (CTRL ALT BACKSPACE) |
| Comment #3.2 by: ccc on 04 May 2008, 19:42 GMT | You must go to file //usr/bin and click to the gnome-panel |
| Comment #4 by: h1volt3 on 27 Mar 2008, 11:14 UTC | reply to this comment | How can I reduce the size of the icons on the dock? They're quite large and occupy significant portion of my screen |
| Comment #5 by: Marius Nestor on 30 Mar 2008, 12:06 UTC | reply to this comment | Go to Start Menu -> Preferences -> Awn Manager, then go to the Bar Appearance tab and set the Bar Height option to 32 or whatever you like.
I have it on 32 and it looks very good... see the screenshots above. |
| Comment #6 by: Eddie on 31 Mar 2008, 06:58 UTC | reply to this comment | While I was trying to organize the applets with the awn manager the awn dock disappeared, I restarted the computer and it still doesn't appear on screen also I'm sure I made it so it would run on startup. I'm new to Linux so I really have no clue about what to do and since it vanished I can't really use my computer since all I'm left with is the background. What should I do? |
| Comment #6.1 by: Marius Nestor on 31 Mar 2008, 07:08 GMT | Right click on the desktop and go to "Create launcher"...
In the "Name" field type: Terminal
In the "Command" field type: gnome-terminal
Click OK. Double click the newly created launcher on your desktop and a terminal window should appear. Now, you can start a GNOME panel with the following command:
gnome-panel &
Or, you can run AWN from the command line to see what's wrong with it, with the following command:
avant-window-navigator
Post here the error, if it gives one...
Also, look at the Sessions application (run gnome-session-properties in a terminal) and see if AWN is listed on the Startup Programs tab. |
| Comment #7 by: Eddie on 31 Mar 2008, 08:34 UTC | reply to this comment | Ok I did what you said and got the dock to appea,r also it wasn't listed among the startup programs but now I added it. When I ran it through the terminal I got this message:

| Comment #8 by: Marius Nestor on 31 Mar 2008, 08:52 UTC | reply to this comment | The Murrine engine is missing from your system. Install it with:
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine
Let me know about further errors or if it worked :) |

| Comment #9.1 by: Marius Nestor on 03 Apr 2008, 09:24 GMT | For autostart, also look at the Sessions application (System -> Preferences -> Sessions) -> Startup Programs tab. If it's not there, then it will not start when you login! Therefore, you will have to add it there...
About the error.... it's very strange... are you on Ubuntu 7.10?
The AWN appears? |
| Comment #10 by: whorider on 03 Apr 2008, 17:32 UTC | reply to this comment | Thanks for the quick response. I'm actually using Hardy 8.04 (Ubuntu), which may be my problem. In (Systems -- Pref -- Sessions) AWN is not listed, I tried to add it, but it wants a command. Not sure what command to use (Noob here). I really hope I can keep this, it looks great. Excellent tutorial. I just have to keep the terminal open after I run ~$ avant-window-navigator, if I close the terminal AWN closes as well. |

| Comment #19 by: 89greener on 26 May 2008, 13:59 UTC | reply to this comment | AWN deleting Desktop files!
So, I've successfully installed AWN and have been running it for three days or so.
BUT, after I restarted last night, it appears that AWN deleted all the files from my Desktop. Has this happened before to anyone else and is there any way to change this setting? It appears as though the theme is set to clear the Desktop when it starts. |
| Comment #19.1 by: Marius Nestor on 26 May 2008, 14:04 GMT | No! AWN does not delete any files at all! I've been running AWN for months now... both at home and work, without problems!
Is your desktop blank? I mean the only thing you can see is the wallpaper? Or you can see AWN and there are no desktop icons? Please be more explicit! |
| Comment #19.2 by: 89greener on 26 May 2008, 14:06 GMT | Update: It appears that AWN did not "delete" my desktop files and instead moved the contents of my desktop into '/usr/share/backgrouds/Desktop'.
Before I restarted last night, I was attempting to 'copy' .jpp & .png files from my desktop into the '/usr/share/backgrounds' folder but I'm still not sure why AWN would bundle up the desktop and move the whole thing into the /usr/share/backgrounds folder. |

| Comment #22 by: Brandon on 16 Nov 2008, 05:00 UTC | reply to this comment | My applets look different than the screenshot above. For example, the logout applet looks like a door with an arrow in it on the bar, but shows the correct icon in preferences when I add it.
Also my ALT+F2 doesn't work any longer, and I can figure out the commands for applications to add them to my launcher. Can anyone help me out since I can't drag and drop from a panel? Thank you in advance! |
| Comment #23 by: Marius Nestor on 17 Nov 2008, 08:19 UTC | reply to this comment | For Brandon: Add the terminal applet to AWN, open it and type:
gnome-panel
The panel will appear, add your favorite applications, then drag & drop them to the AWN dock :)
I guess you know how to remove the panel after that.... |
| Comment #24 by: brandon on 22 Nov 2008, 02:42 UTC | reply to this comment | I tried to drop the shutdown, but AWN dock doesn't take it. Also, it's the applet that I need to change the icon on, not a launcher
Please advise
Thanks! |
| Comment #25 by: Joel on 26 Dec 2008, 17:39 UTC | reply to this comment | when i did:
sudo apt-get install awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunk
it failed. It couldn't find the packages. Maybe because i use Ubuntu 8.10.
But how do i do this if i have 8.10? |

| Comment #28 by: Sooraj on 06 Feb 2010, 06:42 UTC | reply to this comment | thank you for your effoerts to make ubuntu experience better. but i cannot use this awn as it asks me to run a compositon manager. i cannot do that. i installed wbar and the when i close the terminal the bar just goes of. then i tried cairo and simdock. each time i close the config window i starts again and then i had to force quit it. |
| Comment #29 by: Marius Nestor on 09 Feb 2010, 11:29 UTC | reply to this comment | You don't have Compiz (desktop effects) activated! Right click on your desktop and click the "Change Desktop Background" option.... then go to the last tab "Visual Effects" and check the "Normal" option! A video driver must be installed for the effects to work! | |
