Cranberry juice really works wonders in terms of preventing and even curing bladder infections, a new paper in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology argues.

Scientists explain that chemical compounds found in cranberry juice alter the behavior of several bacteria known to cause bladder infections.

Long story short, they keep the bacteria from colonizing the walls of a person's urinary tract.

Besides, they either halt or at least curb the production of urease, i.e. an enzyme documented to up the virulence of existing infections, Daily Mail details.

Given the fact that many species of bacteria are now starting to develop resistance to antibiotics, specialists believe that it might prove worthwhile to look into the possibility of using cranberry juice to prevent and treat infections.

“The current rise of bacterial resistance to antibiotics underscores the importance of developing another approach.

“Based on the demonstrated bioactivity of cranberry, its use in catheters and other medical devices could someday yield considerable benefits to patient health,” Professor Nathalie Tufenkji says.
