A 45-year-old man from Caratinga, Brazil, died after a cow wandered on the roof of his house and it gave way under its weight, making the animal crash right atop on him as he was lying in the bed, The Telegraph reports.

Joao Maria de Souza was with his wife in bed at home, when the cow escaped from a local farm and somehow made its way onto the roof.

The cow fell on Joao’s side of the bed and he was immediately rushed to the hospital. He was still conscious and seemed only to have a leg fracture.

Within hours, while waiting for a more thorough examination, he died of massive internal bleeding, the aforementioned media outlet says.

This is the real tragedy, the man’s family says.

“Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth. But in my view it wasn't the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined,” they say.

The Telegraph notes that the wife and the cow were not injured in the freak accident.
