In memory of Kurt

It seems that Guitar Hero 5 might soon be reaching some choppy waters as Courtney Love has declared her intention to sue the developer and the publisher of the videogame because of the way they used the image of late Kurt Cobain in the recently released title.

Love posted the following on her Twitter feed, “WE are going to sue the […] out of we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises.” Other snippets of her thoughts on Guitar Hero 5 and the use of Kurt Cobain as a character in the music game include “Wow theyre just LIQUIDATING kurt and IM THE DEVIL? I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH GUITAR HERO I LOATHE IT AND FIND IT ODIOUS KURT WOULD HAVE TOO” (original spelling kept for the sake of realism). It might just be that Courtney is feeling bad about the fact that she was not included in Guitar Hero 5.

Apparently, the entire affair is related to the original terms of the agreement between the company that represents the interests of the late Nirvana lead singer and Activision. It seems that the terms only covered use of the songs played by Kobain and did not allow the gaming company to use his image to play any other tracks in Guitar Hero 5. Activision was so enthusiastic about the inclusion of the grunge rocker that it put out a press release about it only one or two days before the videogame came out.

Kurt Cobain appeared like a bad fit for Guitar Hero 5 since the beginning. After all, the singer has always been perceived as being against any kind of commercial and as a rebellious misfit while the music-oriented videogame is one of the ultimate expressions of the commercialization of music, with more and more bands seeing the genre as the last hope for the business.
